Why is Asus Eee a good buy?

Superlight at less than three pounds, the Eee looks to be handsomely tapered, with a 10-inch LED-backlit LCD and a prospective price of $429. Methinks that price could drop in view of Dell setting a strong $299 price point.

CNET UK recently reviewed the 1008HA, and said the netbook was “a small, light, and sexy device aimed at the fashion-conscious netbook fan who puts portability slightly above performance…The glossy black finish, the gently tapering lid, and the wedge-shaped profile all contribute to an overall design that’s more aesthetically pleasing than that of rivals.”

The Seashell incorporates a nonuser-replaceable lithium-polymer battery pack. One advantage is that it can be molded into shape for slenderizing machines like the Asus.

No Apple iPhone porn apps for now

"The Hottest Girls app is temporarily sold out. The server usage is extremely high because of the popularity of this app. Thus, by not distributing the app, we can prevent our servers from crashing. Customer satisfaction is more important to us than profits. Those who already have the app will still be able to use our app. To answer the question on everyone's mind: Yes, the topless images will still be there when it is sold again."

The Philippines welcomes Toyota Prius!

Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) announces the introduction of the country’s first ever hybrid vehicle available in the market, the Toyota Prius. The Prius remains worthy of its name which means “to precede” in Latin, as it is the global pioneer of hybrid technology and many are following its lead.

The Prius makes use of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD), which is celebrated as a breakthrough in vehicle technology, being able to run on its gasoline engine, electric motor or both, as directed by the intelligent energy-management system.

It takes pride in having one of the world’s highest fuel efficiency, having achieved a consumption record of 38km/l , while providing power similar to a larger 2.4-liter engine. Aside from high fuel efficiency, the flexibility of the hybrid system delivers cleaner emissions and cabin quietness but also provides powerful acceleration when needed.

Since its debut in 1997, the world’s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle was sold in over 40 countries and regions around the world. Its cumulative sales exceeded 1.25 million units as of March 31, 2009. The 2009 Prius, is the third-generation model, which will be launched in over 80 countries worldwide to further promote hybrid technology.

Need help making decisions? Try Hunch.com!

"The site Hunch.com is designed to help you make decisions. Ask it a question -- "What kind of shoes should I buy?" -- and it will ask you a few questions about yourself, then come up with an answer. That answer, of course, isn't always a stroke of genius, and nobody should rely solely on Hunch's advice for big, life-altering decisions. However, the site can be fun when it comes to trivial matters."

Would all phones be unlocked soon?

"President Barack Obama's choice to head the Federal Communications Commission plans to review the exclusive arrangements between wireless carriers and cell phone makers.

The issue of exclusive agreements among some of the biggest companies like Apple Inc's iPhone and service provider AT&T Inc is at the center of some lawmakers' concerns about whether such practices hinder competition and innovation."

"...The path to innovation is paved by openness, and unlocking devices is a good start, said Ben Scott, policy director at Free Press, a consumer watchdog."

Who wants a free antivirus from Microsoft?

Microsoft is poised to
start giving away security software.

The company is reportedly trialling free anti-virus software internally and said the beta version would be released "soon".

Called Morro, the software will tackle viruses but lack the broader range of utilities, such as parental locks, found in paid-for security suites.

Morro will be Microsoft's second venture in the highly competitive security market.

Microsoft's first attempt revolved around the Windows Live OneCare service that did not succeed in turning many customers away from rivals such as Symantec and McAfee.

Microsoft plans to discontinue Live OneCare once the Morro software is ready.

No specific date has been given for when Morro will be released, but in the past Microsoft has said it would be out by the end of 2009 at the latest.

Facebook customized URLs

"Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time on Saturday morning, Facebook will allow registration for customized URLs (example: facebook.com/YourNameHere), instead of the usual long list of numbers that show up as a Web address for a profile. The world's largest social media network began sending out notices for the process on Wednesday, including a link for registered trademark brand owners to place their names on a restricted list, in the hope of avoiding the cybersquatting phenomenon that has long plagued the Internet domain name process."

The advantages are obvious: an easier way for users to track down their friends -- or their favorite companies -- on Facebook. It also gives those companies a shot at ranking higher on a Google.

However, given complaints from its members regarding past terms-of-service changes, is Facebook ready to get into the domain name business? Can it truly protect trademark owners from seeing their intellectual property pilfered by those who would grab a username, only to sell it back to its legitimate owner? Can Facebook's servers handle what may turn out to be a midnight crush?

The Asus EeeTop: A Nettop in Search of a Mission

"The Asus ET1602 is a miniature all-in-one desktop with touchscreen functionality. It's certainly fun to use, but figuring out exactly what to use it for might be a tough question. It's got about the same oomph -- or lack thereof -- of a netbook, yet it doesn't have the benefit of being mobile, as there is no built-in battery.

The Asus EeeTop ET1602 is an interesting computer with some potential for home and business use. However, it will surely cause considerable discussion over what users might really do with it.

The ET1602 is essentially a netbook-like computer with a 14-inch by 8-inch LCD touchscreen wrapped around it. With an overall unit measurement of 16 X 11.5 inches, it's in some ways a fully functional computer, and in others it's more reminiscent of a wireless PDA from yesteryear.

Asus EeeTop ET1602

Sure, you can attach the included 12.5-by-5.5-inch keyboard (sans keypad) and mouse to it and have a nifty portable computer sporting a non-clamshell design. Or you can move it around from room to room with its built-in handle attached to the back. Leave the mouse and keyboard behind, and use your finger and a virtual on-screen keyboard for input instead -- but what else can you do with it?"

Why is Nokia's N97 smartphone worth 700 USD?

"The reason the price of the N97 is still so high is that Nokia is not selling it through any particular carrier. Instead it will be sold to U.S. customers in Nokia flagship stores in New York and Chicago as well as online...

For the Apple iPhone 3G S and Palm Pre, however, consumers must sign a two-year contract to get the discounted prices. These phones are exclusive to one carrier. Subscribers are also charged an early cancellation fee if they terminate their contract before it ends..."

Apple iPhones at 99 USD!

"Apple's loudest shot across the bow at the rising tide of smartphone competitors like PALM and RIMM may be its new $99 price tag for the current iPhone 3G, while the new 3GS will begin selling for US$199 for a 16 GB version and $299 for 32 GBs starting June 19 (with a two-year service agreement). That goes into effect immediately."

What's in a Palm Pre?

"The Pre’s biggest advantage over the iPhone is that, in addition to sporting an elegant touch-screen interface that matches or exceeds Apple’s, the new Palm device has a real physical keyboard that slides out from its curved body. While I like the iPhone’s virtual on-screen keyboard, others hate it, and yearn for a device with both a great touch interface and a physical keyboard. The Pre delivers." ---Walter S. Mossberg
